How the CHP became an enemy of the EU

The very people and institutions that you would think would naturally be supporters of the European Union now spend much of their time expressing great anger toward this community of European nations.

You could almost say that the Republican People’s Party (CHP) has declared war on the EU. As a party that labels itself social democrat, it doesn’t even appear to be aware of exactly how it got itself into this comical situation. It spends much of its time these days talking about “letting the EU know its place” or “beating back” EU leaders. You would think that Turkey had entered a battle against the EU and that the CHP was only fighting against enemies. There is such anger, such enmity, such spite being expressed. What the CHP really wants is for the EU to lend its support to its project to bring down this current Turkish administration. What it wants is for the EU to back court decisions that have been made — decisions everyone knows are political in nature and came about without the slightest glance at equity and fairness.
