The danger of an authoritarian regime

The question of “What will happen if the AK Party is forced to close?” is being asked these days not just in Turkey but all over the world.

If the legal case winds down with a decision against the AK Party, it will create a significant vacuum in Turkish politics. And the source of this vacuum will not only be the AK Party, because if it is eliminated from the political arena, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) will also be struck a blow as its basis for survival will have vanished. It is quite clear that the real problems would start after the forced closure of the AK Party. And in an atmosphere wherein the AK Party was blocked, the CHP was paralyzed and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) was anachronistic, Turkey would find itself simply awaiting another authoritarian regime. What would happen would be that the authoritarian regime, which has recently been rehearsing its role, would come, fill the vacuum and take over the administrative power that it already sees as belonging to it.
